Arriva London’s Palmers Green garage just got greener
We are always looking at ways to improve our green credentials and a recent initiative, part of our Destination Green programme across the business, at our North London Palmers Green garage is another illustration of this process.
Palmers Green garage is getting greener by harvesting rainwater, which is then used in its bus wash. In an initiative agreed with the council, two underground tanks were installed next to the garage last November, to catch and store the rainwater from the roof.
As Palmers Green Engineering manager David Brannan said:
"Harvesting rainwater is an environmentally friendly, cost-effective solution that is reducing our water bills and the amount of mains water we’re consuming. By capturing the rain, we can then utilise the stored water by pumping it through our bus wash. Each of our 78 buses are put through the bus wash every night so that they are clean and ready for the day ahead."
The project has also born fruit in the last week where water saving across the Capital has been crucial. If there is a period when the rainwater isn’t needed, it is automatically filtered and released into a stream behind the garage.
"Since the installation of the tanks, we have saved 294 cubic metres of water. Destination Green involves all Arriva staff taking environmentally-friendly action and looking for new ways of reducing the company’s impact on the planet’s resources. I believe this latest initiative at Palmers Green shows our commitment to the cause."

We have a vacancy for a Duty Manager, reporting to the Deputy Operations Manager of Grays and Operations Manager of Barking / Grays Garage. The role includes supervising, controlling and co-coordinating services operating from the garage. The position will also include office-based tasks, including audit work, staff allocation and organising daily run-outs.
Arriva London currently has a vacancy for a Training Specialist, reporting to the Engineering Training Manager. The position will primarily be based at the Arriva London training academy at Edmonton garage, but will involve working at various locations around London and the Home Counties.
Located at Dartford garage, this full-time shift-based role will primarily consist of ferrying bus drivers to various locations using nine-seater minibuses. Reporting to the Operations Manager, this is an essential role within the business and the successful applicants will be an integral part of the operation.
