Brixton Beaver Scouts visit Arriva London’s Brixton bus garage
Being a Beaver Scout means you are a young person usually aged between six and eight years old, and you belong to the first and youngest section in the Scouting family. Beaver Scouts enjoy making friends, playing games, helping others and going on visits. They usually meet once a week in a Beaver Scout Colony, and for the Beavers of the 2nd Streatham Hill (Christchurch) Beaver Group, last week their meeting was a voyage of discovery as they visited Arriva London’s Brixton bus garage.
The group leader Nicole had contacted Arriva London to ask if there was a possibility they could visit the garage and see how things are done. Deputy operating manager Sunny was pleased to be able to confirm a visit was possible and the group arrived late one afternoon last week.
Sunny first gave them all a briefing in the driver’s output area, telling them what they needed to do to be safe in such a busy bus garage. He also said he wanted them to be very observant, as he would later ask them to draw him a picture of the buses they had seen. Having issued everyone with a Hi-Vi vest, he then took them out into the main garage area and led them onto one of the New Routemaster buses.
There were lots of questions from the Beaver Scouts about the buses and the drivers, and Sunny introduced them to one of the drivers to explain how he became a bus driver and what it is like to drive one.
All of the children, and some of the leaders, took turns to sit in the driver’s seat and have their photograph taken, and ask more questions. The Beavers all had a chance to go upstairs to the top deck using both stairways, and to use the bell push. Some made the point that they had never been on a bus before.
Having had all their questions answered, and been all over the bus, Sunny led them back across the garage and took them to the canteen, where they were given paper and colouring pencils to create their drawings.
Three of the Beavers won chocolates for their efforts, and everyone received a model red bus as a memento. Finally, they had a group photo with Sunny and then wished everyone a happy Christmas and said a massive thank you.

“We really enjoyed visiting the Arriva London Brixton bus garage, the staff were very friendly, and knowledgeable. Sunny especially went out of his way to make the Beavers happy (toy buses and sweets!!). We learnt a lot about the daily routine of being both a bus driver and a bus! The Beavers particularly enjoyed sitting in the driver’s seat of the new Routemaster!”

Arriva London’s Heritage Fleet assists The Royal Hospital Chelsea to mark their National Care Home Open Day
The Royal Hospital Chelsea recently celebrated National Care Home Open Day 2018 by opening the doors to its dedicated care facility and welcoming supporters and visitors to the event.

We are always looking at ways to improve our green credentials and a recent initiative, part of our Destination Green programme across the business, at our North London Palmers Green garage is another illustration of this process.
Last summer, we were delighted to be awarded the contract from TfL to operate route W4 running from Oakthorpe Park Estate to Tottenham Ferry Lane estate, operating from Wood Green garage.
As part of our commitment to developing our business, we invest heavily in training for all of our staff to offer the great customer experience. We also look at other ways in which we can develop our relationships with the communities we serve, and allow them the opportunity of learning about our processes and to meet some of the team.
