Arriva London’s Palmers Green garage just got greener
We are always looking at ways to improve our green credentials and a recent initiative, part of our Destination Green programme across the business, at our North London Palmers Green garage is another illustration of this process.
Palmers Green garage is getting greener by harvesting rainwater, which is then used in its bus wash. In an initiative agreed with the council, two underground tanks were installed next to the garage last November, to catch and store the rainwater from the roof.
As Palmers Green Engineering manager David Brannan said:
"Harvesting rainwater is an environmentally friendly, cost-effective solution that is reducing our water bills and the amount of mains water we’re consuming. By capturing the rain, we can then utilise the stored water by pumping it through our bus wash. Each of our 78 buses are put through the bus wash every night so that they are clean and ready for the day ahead."
The project has also born fruit in the last week where water saving across the Capital has been crucial. If there is a period when the rainwater isn’t needed, it is automatically filtered and released into a stream behind the garage.
"Since the installation of the tanks, we have saved 294 cubic metres of water. Destination Green involves all Arriva staff taking environmentally-friendly action and looking for new ways of reducing the company’s impact on the planet’s resources. I believe this latest initiative at Palmers Green shows our commitment to the cause."
