Arriva London’s Clapton garage helps introduce bus transport to Orchard School reception classes

At Arriva London, we take our role in the community very seriously, and are always seeking ways to help educate the community in how we can best serve them, and how complex operating buses can be. So, when we recently received this request, we looked at how we could best accommodate them.

“Hello!
I am the Early Years Leader at Orchard School in Well St., Hackney.http://www.orchard.hackney.sch.uk/ My Reception children are studying transport this term and we are enquiring about making a trip to visit your bus garage.
As a secondary, we have made part of our classroom into a bus and the children have had a whale of a time - do you happen to have any old bus bits / maps / clothes / etc we could have to make it even better?”

The outcome of this request was a lot of planning and preparation involving our Clapton garage and the school, which eventually resulted in the visit taking place on the 6th February.

There were three classes, a total of ninety children plus their teachers / carers, that we needed to cater for and so it was decided, both for safety and logistical reasons, to collect the children from the school in one of our New Routemaster buses, bring them to the garage and then return them afterwards.

The excitement was palpable for the drive to the garage, with many of the children never having travelled on a bus before. Although very excited, they were extremely well behaved, with shrieks of delight when operating manager Phil announced that they were going to be taken in the bus through the bus wash.

Following this, engineering manager Simon explained how the buses come into the engineering facility for regular checking and service, and then answered lots of eager questions. Simon then presented the school with some destination blinds and other souvenirs for the children to take back to school for their own bus, back in the classroom.

The bus was then taken out onto the forecourt and Oz, our driver for the day, entertained the children in the bus cab, showing them how the horn, wipers and public announcement system work.

To top it off, all the children received a red model Arriva squidgy bus to take home.

The teacher from ‘Cherry’ class said:-

“Three reception classes from Orchard School have been to visit Clapton bus garage. We had an incredible time; it was part of our unit on transport. A huge thank you to Arriva London. Everybody that we dealt with today was so thoughtful, and they looked after the children incredibly well”.
