Arriva London’s Heritage Fleet assists The Royal Hospital Chelsea to mark their National Care Home Open Day
The Royal Hospital Chelsea recently celebrated National Care Home Open Day 2018 by opening the doors to its dedicated care facility and welcoming supporters and visitors to the event.
We were privileged to be invited to support the open day with one of our Heritage Fleet red Routemasters, RML 901.
Care Home Open Day is now in its 6th year and continues to promote the values of friendship, making connections and celebrating older & vulnerable people. Each year focuses on a different theme, with this year’s chosen theme being 'Linking Communities'.
Buses are one of the main ways of linking communities, and it was with this in mind that the bus was invited to be on display, together with some London cabs, members of the Royal Household Cavalry, some children from a local school and a Bounce Alzheimer’s Therapy table-tennis kit for everyone to have a play on.
We were lucky to have the opportunity to meet some of the Chelsea Pensioners, including John aged 86, and Michael aged 76, who had fond memories of their days in the Royal Engineers, and also old Routemaster bus trips. When offered the opportunity to be photographed beside the iconic red bus and then to sit in the driver’s cab, both jumped at the chance, creating a great photo opportunity with both red liveries combined.
The Royal Hospital’s Director of Health and Wellbeing, Professor Deborah Sturdy OBE, said:
"We were delighted to bring together our military and care community neighbours in celebrating Care Home Open Day 2018. This was a unique opportunity to celebrate our military heritage and share the developments in care at the home of the Chelsea Pensioners."
Our Communication Support Manager, Nik Partou, explained:
"We are committed to supporting our local communities across the whole of London, and what better way to do so, than to recognise the enormous contribution the Chelsea Pensioners have made to our lives, and the fantastic job the Royal Hospital does in caring for them. It has been a privilege to be part of this event."

As part of our commitment to developing our business, we invest heavily in training for all of our staff to offer the great customer experience. We also look at other ways in which we can develop our relationships with the communities we serve, and allow them the opportunity of learning about our processes and to meet some of the team.
Over the past few months we have been working with TfL, conducting Accessibility Awareness forums at our garages.
Doing the right thing, one of our four brand values, is what we have been doing for the last six years by encouraging all of our employees to give to their favourite charities through our Payroll Giving scheme - during this time, they have given more than £1,000,000 pounds to over 160 charities.
Going to school is something we all had to do, but going to school with a red London double-decker bus, and letting four classes from year one come on board to ask questions about the bus, is a privilege we experienced this week at Newbury Park Primary School in North East London.
Last June, Arriva London was delighted to have been re-awarded the TfL contract to run route W6 (Edmonton Green – Southgate Station) for a further five years, starting in January 2018 with brand new buses.
As the festive season approaches, we all look forward to the good-will of giving and receiving, and this was truly illustrated last week when members of our staff made a tour of London, on our open top bus, to meet representatives of some of their charities they give to through their Payroll Giving and celebrate #GivingTuesday.
